November is Diabetes Awareness Month, a time when individuals, community groups and organizations around the globe bring attention to diabetes. Diabetes is a chronic condition that occurs when the body does not produce enough insulin or when it cannot use it effectively, resulting in high blood glucose levels.

According to the World Health Organization, 1 in 10 adults worldwide have diabetes and most cases (90-95%) have type 2 diabetes, which can be prevented or delayed through behavioural and lifestyle changes. Commitment to diabetes management includes eating healthy meals and snacks, enjoying regular physical activity, monitoring your blood sugar at home if necessary, taking diabetes medications as prescribed and managing your stress effectively.

Nutrition plays a vital role in blood sugar regulation and overall health. When we eat, food travels to the stomach. Food is made up of 3 basic nutrients (carbohydrates, fat and protein). During digestion, carbohydrates are broken down into sugar otherwise known as glucose. Carbohydrates include bread, cereal, rice, pasta, potatoes, fruit, milk and yogurt.

When you have diabetes, glucose enters the bloodstream and is not properly used for energy due to your body’s lack of insulin or inability to use insulin effectively. As a result, your blood sugar rises. What types of carbs you eat, when you eat, and how much you eat all play an important role in regulating your blood sugar levels.
